Following Reading's playoff loss to Burnley, the club and manager Steve Coppell parted ways.
Today saw even more of the club dismantled as the Royals try to start from scratch to get back into the top flight.
Michael Duberry, Marcus Hahnemann, Graeme Murty and Leroy Lita have been released while Alan Bennett and young pros Gary Frewen, Scott Golbourne, Tom Hateley and Daniel Spence will also all be leaving the club.
The release ends a long spell at the club for Hahnemann. The American keeper made 277 appearances for the Royals, who went from the Second Division to the Premier League in his time with the club.
During their Premier League stint, Hahnemann was one of four American keepers playing in one of the top leagues in the world.
Nick Hammond, Director of Football for Reading, had this to say about the moves — and about Hahnemann's legacy at the club.
The players who are leaving will all be sorely missed, but this week has seen the end of an era and it’s time for the Club to move on. It was important for us to resolve the issue of our out of contract players quickly, which now allows us to focus all our energies on recruiting the right manager to replace Steve Coppell. Graeme Murty and Marcus Hahnemann were key members of the team throughout Steve Coppell’s managerial reign, and they will both forever hold a significant place in the Club’s history….Marcus has been a tremendously consistent and reliable goalkeeper for many years, and has without doubt been one of our most important players in the last decade. n addition to their undoubted contribution on the pitch, Graeme and Marcus have also been terrific ambassadors for the Club in the local community and I know many supporters will be sorry to see them go.
